The Centre, which is nestled in the natural splendour of Dorset's Jurassic Coast, acts as a beacon of marine conservation and education. As a marine warden here, my days are packed with a variety of activities, each of which provides a new perspective on the fascinating world of marine ecology.

The care of our different aquatic residents kicks off the morning routine at the Centre. The tanks, which mimic the local marine ecology, are teeming with life. Feeding time is really magical. The anemones softly grip their food with their bright, waving tentacles, displaying a lovely yet efficient survival strategy. The crabs scurry around, their claws efficiently managing the morsels. The prawns dart through the water with precision, and the gobies knowingly emerging from their hiding places to feed, serve as a reminder of the intricate web of life under the waves. We then test the water temperature and salinity levels to make sure the residents are healthy and happy.

After ensuring that our aquatic inhabitants are well-fed and that the waters surrounding them are clean, I shift my focus to the Centre's shop. This area is more than simply a shop; it is a showcase of sustainable living and environmentally friendly practices. We sell anything from instructive literature and ocean-themed souvenirs to eco-friendly alternatives for everyday use. Serving customers here is more than simply a transaction; it's an opportunity to discuss marine conservation and the necessity of making sustainable decisions in our daily lives.

However, the most significant aspect of my morning is educating the public about the marine biodiversity in Kimmeridge Bay. As a marine biologist, I get a lot of satisfaction from sharing my knowledge and passion. I emphasise the many species found in the bay and their ecological importance through interactive activities, and informative speeches. Discussions frequently turn to the vital issue of marine protected zones.

Kimmeridge Bay is more than simply a beautiful spot; it's also a marine protected area, a testament to conservation efforts. Marine life thrives here because it is not subjected to the demands of fishing and other extractive activities. I emphasise to our visitors the importance of such areas in preserving biodiversity, sustaining healthy ecosystems, and playing a part in global marine conservation.

My duty as a marine biologist expands to include teaching the public about a lesser-known but vital environmental issue: nurdles.

Nurdles are little plastic pellets the size of a lentil that are used as a raw material in the plastics industry. Unfortunately, these nurdles frequently end up in our oceans due to carelessness and accidents, posing a huge threat to marine life and ecosystems.

I interact with members of the public, including locals and visitors, to raise awareness about the negative impact of nurdles. This entails holding brief educational sessions and interactive workshops at the Centre or near the shorelines where these pellets are frequently found.

I like to talk about how marine animals mistake nurdles for food due to their small size and often clear or light colour. They can cause major injury or even death to marine species if consumed. Seabirds feel full up after eating them, then stop eating and subsequently die of starvation. Nurdles also serve as sponges for dangerous contaminants. These contaminants can subsequently enter the food chain, endangering not only marine life but also human health.

We frequently do nurdle hunts on the beach to make the learning process more exciting and meaningful. Participants, particularly children, find it both educational and pleasant to hunt for and gather these tiny pellets. It's a hands-on demonstration of the breadth of microplastic contamination and its reach, even in supposedly pristine areas.

In addition, I emphasise the significance of responsible plastic usage and disposal in daily life. We examine many methods for decreasing plastic waste, such as purchasing products with minimal packaging, recycling effectively, and supporting policies and programmes that aim to reduce plastic pollution.

Nurdle education activities are more than just a means of increasing awareness; they are also a call to action. Every conversation, every nudle gathered, adds to a broader campaign to protect the health of our oceans. It demonstrates the importance of informed communities in effecting positive environmental change.

I have a great sense of satisfaction as the morning gives way to the afternoon. Each encounter, whether it's feeding a small goby or talking about marine protection with a visitor, contributes to a better knowledge and appreciation for our oceans. In these moments, I am reminded of why I chose this career in the first place: to be a voice and a carer for the beautiful life that exists beneath the waves.

After a morning of educational and conservation activities at the Kimmeridge Wild Seas Centre, the afternoon shifts from the shores to the sea. We go on an exciting quest of discovery as part of the Seasearch team.

Seasearch, a renowned marine conservation programme, provides a one-of-a-kind platform for citizen scientists and marine lovers to actively contribute to the monitoring and protection of marine species. Snorkeling surveys allow a broader number of people to participate in marine research, breaking down the boundaries that are generally connected with scuba diving.

We plunge into the cold, inviting waters of the bay, armed with snorkelling equipment, underwater slates for taking notes, and waterproof cameras. The calm surface of the water conceals the flurry of action below. The underwater scene shows itself in all its grandeur as we float and gaze through our masks.

The brightness and vigour of life just beneath the surface is the first thing that strikes me. We glide across swathes of seaweed, a key home for young fish and other marine animals, whose value in marine ecosystems is often overlooked. Small schools of fish move in unison, providing an enthralling show of aquatic life in motion.

As we go, I take note of the numerous animals we come across. The purpose of these surveys is to meticulously record the sightings as well as observe them. This includes recording the types and quantities of organisms, as well as their behaviours and the overall health of the seabed. This information is critical for gaining a better knowledge of marine biodiversity and the health of our oceans.

The intimacy that snorkelling surveys provide with the aquatic environment is one of the most exciting parts of them.

We finish our survey as the afternoon sun begins to fade. The experience had been rewarding, both in terms of the data gathered and the personal connection formed with the marine world. We emerge from the water with a sense of accomplishment and a reinvigorated dedication to marine protection.

Reflecting on the day, the journey of a marine biologist is revealed to be one of constant learning, discovery, and advocacy, from the interactive instructional positions at Kimmeridge Wild Seas Centre to the hands-on research with Seasearch. It's a career path that aims to not only study the ocean's mysteries but also to safeguard its priceless resources for future generations.

Follow me on a journey of discovery.
